As Halloween soon approaches, we can't forget about our four legged friends! Dressing up and painting horses has been a tradition practiced for many years. Natives first started this trend, not for fun, but for tribal reasons. Before battle, horses would be painted and dressed up in beads and cloths to represent a certain tribe's beliefs and values. As time progressed, people discovered that painting horses is actually a talent. Horse painting became popular in circus' and at fairs, where prizes would be awarded for the most creative and outlandish horse painting. Nowadays, horses are painted, mostly for fun! Tempera paint is non-toxic and washable and a great way to show your Halloween-y spirit!
Not only are horses painted for Halloween or just for fun, they are
also painted for special events. Parades and celebrations use painted
horses as a way of decoration and advertisement. For example, in the
London Olympics, horses were painted to represent each country
participating in the games. Because horses are so big and
attention-grabbing, they really make their colour noticeable! Equine
first aid training also sometimes use painted horses to demonstrate
skeletal, muscular and intestinal movement, right on the horse.
Horse painting is a real talent, and there are legitimate qualified trained painters!

I'm terrible at art... I can't even imagine how difficult it would be to paint a horse. I'd probably get kicked....or....eaten...or something ~ (random squiggle). Hmm, do you think that it's a form of degradation to paint an animal and then judge it off on that?
ReplyDeleteWow, well that didn't show up as a squiggle when I posted this... how awkward of me lol
ReplyDeleteIs horse painting difficult because the horses move around and stuff? Do they like to be painted or are they fussy?
ReplyDeleteZulfie- No I don't think so at all, I think it's creative!
ReplyDeleteNicola- Horses are usually very tolerant to being touched and fussed over. Usually horses being painted are very tolerant as it is though, they're used to it
i wonder if the paint is hard to wash off... would you ever paint your horse? if so what design or picture would u paint on it?
ReplyDeleteI'm kind of put off by this idea. I do not see why people feel the need to paint horses, why not paint a wall or a canvas? I understand the tribal reasons but I do not think it is right to paint them for our own amusement.
ReplyDeleteKarissa- Yeah its tempera paint so it just washes off with water! I actually have already painted an old horse I had (he passed away sadly :() for an event we did, we just painted stars on his bum, but we washed it off after!
ReplyDeleteShyanna- it doesn't hurt the horses and they don't care about it. However, there is actual horse hair dye that will permanently change the colour, and hoof paint, which is like horse nail polish which is iffy for some people.
